GLOSSARY OF TERMS

We know this is not the most comprehensive glossary at the moment but we will keep working on it in between trying to source you the best precision CNC equipment at the most affordable prices we can.

Hopefull we can eventually provide a really helpful resource here in the future but for the time being the keyboard warriors can have their fun saying that the glossary is barely a glossary. We know.

ATC Spindle

Related to Automatic Tool Change Spindle, ATC,

An ATC Spindle is part of an Automatic Tool Change System that features a spindle design that facilitates the fitment of Tool Holders that can be used in an automated tool change system. An ATC Spindle uses Tool Holders like MAS403 BT or HSK Tool Holders that do not require human interaction to change.

see ATC Spindle definition.

Extract: There are a variety of types of Tool Holder that are designed to function with automatic tool change systems, each of which have a slightly different form or method of clamping into the Spindle itself. This is a huge topic in itself and warrants its own feature topic. Some popular choices of ATC compatible Tool Holders are MAS403 BT Tool HoldersDIN69893 HSK Tool Holders, ISO, CAT, NT and more.

Axis

In CNC machining, axis refers to a plane of motion. Most CNC units work using three axes: the x-axis, the y-axis and the z-axis, but more advanced systems operate with four and 5-axis.

ATC

Related to Automatic Tool Change Spindle, ATC Spindle,

An abbreviation for Automatic Tool Change, which in this sense refers to a number of components in a CNC machine that work together in order to perform pre-programmed Tool Changes automatically, without human intervention. Effective ATC systems can lead to huge cost savings and efficiency improvements by minimising downtime.

CAD

CAD is an abbreviation for Computer Aided Design. Computer-aided design is the use of computers to aid in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications through documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing

CNC

Computer Numerical Control. CNC technically refers to anything that is numerically controlled by computers; but in this case we will use CNC as a term to refer to the machining of materials and use of machinery that adopts CNC technologies. For example, a Milling machine that uses CNC controls, software and automation equipment to create CNC machining programs that are normally executed automatically or with limited human intervention.

CNC Tool Holder

Related to: Automatic Tool Change Spindle, ATC, ATC Spindle

A Toolholder is a mechanical device that provides the vital, safe and precision interaction between the user’s choice of cutting tool and the spindle drive motor system. A Cutting Tool is mounted into the chosen type of tool holder and tightened using a variety of means dependant on the design of the tool holder. This must be completed safely and securely in order to reduce vibration and maximise the stability and rigidity required in order for the safe machining of precision cuts with clean surface finishes. What is a HSK Tool Holder?

H

HSK

The HSK type of tool holder is a highly innovative design that originates from Germany, Europe where this cutting-edge technology is widely used. HSK is a German abbreviation or Abkürzung, and translates as ‘Hollow Taper Shank’. Unlike BT Tool Holders that feature a 7/24 comparatively long tapered shank, HSK Tools feature a short 1/10, hollow shank. We will go into this in a little more detail later but essentially it removes the need for a retention knob and allows for ultra-precision high speed machining. Tool Height Setter

Related to: UTS-2 CNC Tool Height Setter

Sometime called a Z Height Setter or CNC Touch Off Plate. There are two types of tool setter: the internal tool setting and the external tool setting. Internal tool setting is to install the tool directly on a fixed position of the machine tool (for lathes, the tool is directly installed on the tool holder or mounted on the tool holder through the tool holder). This method is mostly used in turning CNC machine tools. For external tool setting, the tool setter must be installed on the tool holder (lathe) through the tool holder, together with the tool holder, calibrated outside the machine tool in advance, and then the tool can be installed on the machine tool. This method is currently mainly used Used in boring and milling CNC machine tools, such as CNC machining centers.

Tool Holder Tightening Fixture

A Tool Holder Tightening fixture is essentially a jig type clamping device that allows you to holder a particular type of Tool Holder in it so you can safely and securely get leverage on the tightening tools in order to make sure the cutting tools that you install are sufficiently tight and accurately positioned. Below you can see examples of a BT Tool Holder Tightening Fixture and a HSK Tool Holder Tightening Fixture... We also have an SK Tool Holder Tightening Fixture.
